Chemno's new order in Uasin Gishu
The county government of Uasin Gishu has ordered for the closure of all private slaughterhouses.
Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno said the decision has been made so as to make it easier for the monitoring of the livestock being slaughtered for human consumption.
This comes barely a fortnight after an operation at a private slaughterhouse in Eldoret where six carcarses and 4 weakly cows were discovered.
Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at the 64 stadium in Eldoret town, Chemno further expressed concerns over increased livestock theft cases in the county.
“This has not been a problem for us but it is slowly coming back,” noted Chemno.
“We are now making it mandatory that anyone transporting a cow or sheep must not only have a letter from the veterinary services but also a confirmation from the area chief allowing the transport of the livestock,” he said.
Similar sentiments were shared by the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan who also put on notice unscrupulous traders who sell dead cows to slaughterhouses.
“Those selling dead or weakly cows, we’re coming for you. We will not allow this kind of business to go on,” noted Hassan.
During the Jamhuri celebrations, the Deputy Governor read Governor Jackson Mandago’s speech which outlined various development projects his administration is rolling out in various sectors among them Health, Education, Tourism, Cooperatives, Water and Agriculture among others.
Ag County Secretary Edwin Bett, CEC PSM and Devolution Barnabas Tarus, CEC Lands Eng. Nelson Maritim, Ag. CO Administration Wilson Sawe, CO Lands Ruth Chelashaw and other county officials were on attendance.
