A sombre mood engulfed the area as hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their respects to the five Kenya Certificate o Primary Education (KCPE) candidates in Uasin Gishu who tragically lost their lives in a boat accident that occurred in a man-made lake in Ainabkoi, constituency.
The mourners, including grief-stricken classmates, were unable to hold back their tears as parents sorrowfully received the bodies of their children, preparing for their final journey during a requiem mass held at the school's compound on Friday.
Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Belio Kipsang, was in attendance and delivered a heartfelt condolence message on behalf of President William Ruto. President Ruto described the drowning incident that happened last Saturday as a heart-wrenching tragedy that prematurely ended the promising futures of these young children.
"I understand that parents and fellow candidates have endured immense trauma just days before the national examination. We are committed to providing the school's candidates with special consideration in the selection of secondary schools," PS Kipsang announced.
He also revealed that the government had allocated Sh5 million to enhance the school's boarding facilities as a tribute to the departed students.
The pupils were from Arap Moi Primary School.
