Village Homes Reduced to Ashes Amid Witchcraft Suspicions in Elgeyo Marakwet

Multiple families in the village of Korongoi, located in the Kapcherop division have been rendered homless after their houses  were reduced to ashes.

This is as a result of suspicions of witchcraft arising from a dispute between two students in a local school. Nelson Chemitei, a resident who also lost his home in the blaze, shared that the trouble began when a young boy tore his classmate's book and set it ablaze.

Chemitei further explained that this act  deeply offended the other student's family, who promptly accused it of being an act of witchcraft, setting off a chain of events that led to the widespread destruction of property.

Around 30 individuals armed with crude weapons launched an ambush on their homestead, leveling accusations of black magic against them. As panic spread, these assailants set fire to the houses, including that of Chemitei's brother, leaving everyone scrambling for safety.

Kapcherop Division Deputy County Commissioner, Abdulrahman Karnen, confirmed the incident and stated that they were in active pursuit of the attackers.

Karnen expressed their determination to apprehend and charge those responsible for the arson, despite the initial reluctance of the affected families and villagers to provide information to the police out of fear of further reprisals.
