The late Agnes Tirop |
Ibrahim Rotich, the prime suspect in the tragic death of the esteemed athlete Agnes Tirop, left a poignant suicide note after the alleged incident. This revelation came to light during the recent proceedings at the Eldoret High Court.
Contents of the Note
Victor Koilel, who paced Tirop during her runs, detailed the contents of this note in his testimony before Justice Wananda Anuro. The note, presented in court, unveiled Rotich's explicit desire to end his life due to the toxic dynamics within his relationship with the late Tirop.
Koilel, while recounting the note, highlighted two methods Rotich contemplated for his own demise—either through a fatal road accident or by throwing himself into a river. One striking excerpt from the note emphasized, "There's no need for suffering in a strained marriage; I'd rather end it by plunging into a river or in a fatal road accident."
Moreover, the note expressed Rotich's wish for no ceremonial proceedings upon his self-inflicted end. Koilel mentioned discovering the notebook containing these intentions while moving Tirop's belongings from the crime scene in Iten to her parents' home in Nandi County.
According to Koilel, this discovery happened after law enforcement transported Tirop's body from the crime scene to the Iten County Referral Hospital mortuary on that tragic day.
Tirop's arguments against Rotich
Koilel handed the suicide note to Vincent Tirop, the deceased's father, who then submitted it to the police as crucial evidence in the ongoing murder trial. Koilel also testified about Tirop's grievances against Rotich, citing her discontent with his lavish spending of her hard-earned money in nightclubs and his frequent assaults following her inquiries about these expenses.
Vincent Tirop, in his court testimony, recounted the distressing events of 2016 when Rotich took his daughter away, causing her to abandon her education during her second year of Form Two. Despite Vincent's persistent efforts to locate his daughter, all communication was cut off by Rotich, leaving him in anguish for four agonizing years without contact with Agnes.
Mistreatment of Tirop's family
Martin Tirop, the late athlete's brother, further testified about Rotich's mistreatment of their family, especially when they sought financial help from their late sister. Martin disclosed Rotich's reluctance to engage or assist in any form.
Rotich, currently out on a sh 400,000 bond, continues to deny the charge of murdering Tirop in November 2021 at their rural estate on the outskirts of Iten town, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The trial has seen testimonies from four key prosecution witnesses, including Tirop's younger sister, Eve Jepngetich, with the proceedings scheduled to resume today.
