Boost for fish farmers in Uasin Gishu County

Fish farming in Uasin Gishu County benefits for local farmers
Uasin Gishu County has intensified efforts to promote fish farming, responding to the increasing demand in Eldoret City and surrounding areas.

To support this initiative, the county government has been distributing fingerlings and fish feed to farmers who have established ponds, aiming to boost production and meet the growing market needs.

The county is also encouraging fish farmers to embrace a cooperative structure, believing this approach will help them maximize the benefits of fish farming.

Speaking during the distribution of fish feed, the Fisheries Chief Officer, Nixon Cheplong, emphasized the importance of collaboration among farmers. “The main reason fish farmers are struggling is because they haven't come together in cooperatives. I urge them to do so, as it will allow them to pool resources and improve their profitability,” he said.

Fish farming plays a vital role in the local economy. It not only provides a reliable source of income for farmers but also creates employment opportunities throughout the supply chain, from hatcheries to retail markets.

Additionally, fish farming contributes to food security by ensuring a sustainable supply of nutritious food. By promoting this sector, the county is helping to strengthen the economy and improve livelihoods for many residents.
