Schools told to get industrial attachment for students
The union of technical Private Tertiary Institutions in the North Rift region has asked lecturers, teachers, and management of the institutions to make necessary efforts in obtaining industrial attachment or internship placements relevant to their course of study and which gives them needed knowledge.
The officials urged lecturers and the management to play a role in helping students because they face serious challenges of getting firms for industrial attachment in their core areas of competence and others spent months searching for a company to accept them without success.
Led by Nehema institute of Science and Technology Director Joseph Chepkwony and Hoanga Kambarage who is a bonafide member of the union, they said many students have lamented over the unpleasant experiences, especially the challenges encountered in the process of finding a company wishing to accept and accommodate them without asking for payment for the knowledge that will be acquired.
"Industrial attachment is very crucial in providing students with work experience that prepares them for the workplace and helps students discover their areas of career interests which they are most likely to pursue hence it should be taken seriously," said Nehema Institute of Science and Technology Director Joseph Chepkwony.
They spoke at Kuinet in Uasin Gishu during the official opening of a training center established by Nehema institute of science and technology to help students training in electrical, agriculture and plumping.
"We urge organizations to make provisions and fully support students seeking for industrial attachment placements with necessary skills and knowledge as a way of improving the quality of human resource in future," added Hoanga Kambarage.
The two, however, asked learning institutions to establish projects related to courses which they offer to avoid the suffering by students in trying to find placements for an internship.
