Two lawmakers from Turkana County on Tuesday were interrogated at the Rift Valley Directorate of Criminal Investigations Regional Headquarters regarding the security situation in the North Rift.
The duo Turkana County Woman Representative, Cecilia Ngitit, and Turkana East MP, Nicholas Ngikor, accompanied by their legal representatives, as they had been summoned to provide information about the inter-ethnic conflicts involving three local communities.
Speaking to the press outside the regional DCI offices, the politicians attributed the ongoing tensions to certain leaders who were allegedly in inciting their communities in an attempt to expand their territories.
Ngitit specifically attributed the recurring insecurity in the North Rift to the pressure to create new constituencies and counties, suggesting that leaders with expansionist agendas were pushing for land acquisition and inciting their communities to displace other ethnic groups.
She also expressed bewilderment at why certain communities were attempting to alter boundaries that had been in place since colonial times when the country's borders were initially established.
Both politicians defended their community, emphasizing that they were a peace-loving people who maintained harmonious relations with their international neighbors from Uganda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, as well as the Samburu community on one side.
They questioned why conflicts were arising concerning the Kapedo area.
